  18. This article describes how to change the primary physical disk and
  19. controller while maintaining user accounts and desktop settings after you
  20. have installed Windows NT.
  21.  
  22. MORE INFORMATION
  23. ================

  25. This situation may occur when you need larger disk capacity or a more
  26. versatile disk controller. For example, Windows NT if installed on an IDE
  27. drive and you want to upgrade to a large SCSI drive without losing user
  28. accounts or desktop settings.
  29.  
  30. NOTE: This procedure is not recommended by Microsoft and therefore is not
  31. supported. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding the
  32. performance or reliability of this procedure.
  33.  
  34. To change the primary physical disk and controller while maintaing user
  35. account and desktop settings:
  36.  
  37. 1. Create a startup MS-DOS disk and copy FDISK.EXE, FORMAT.COM, and SYS.COM
  38.    to it.
  39.  
  40. 2. Configure both drives.
  41.  
  42. 3. Place a primary FAT partition on the new drive and format it.
  43.  
  44. 4. Use XCOPY to copy Windows NT files and directories from the old drive to
  45.    the new drive.
  46.  
  47. 5. Create a directory called CONFIG off the root directory of the new drive
  48.    and copy %WINNT_ROOT%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\*.* to it.
  49.  
  50. 6. Remove the %WINNT_ROOT%\SYSTEM32 subdirectory and all of its
  51.    subdirectories on the new drive.
  52.  
  53. 7. Shut down the computer and physically remove or disconnect the old
  54.    drive.
  55.  
  56. 8. Restart the computer, run CMOS, and remove the old drive reference.
  57.  
  58. 9. Insert the startup disk and "SYS" the new drive (A:\sys c:).
  59.  
  60. 10. Remove the startup disk and verify the new drive starts.
  61.  
  62. 11. Reinstall Windows NT over the old installation.
  63.  
  64. 12. After you reinstall Windows NT, start MS-DOS, and change to the CONFIG
  65.    directory you created in step 5.
  66.  
  67. 13. Delete *.EVT and SYSTEM.* files.
  68.  
  69. 14. Copy the remaining files to the %WINNT_ROOT%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG directory.

  71. When you restart Windows NT, user accounts and desktop settings should be
  72. maintained.
